Giant women

This is a comic about my experience and journey of embracing feminism back in middle school, told through a giant lady and her children. The comic also explores how beauty is destroyed and reconstructed on the women’s body, and how we associate a women’s worth to out perception of beauty.

Reading Whiteman by Robert crumb was quite a mixed experience. On one hand the story is set up to be quite unexpected, and at the same time the behavior of the    “White man” is a common trope that is often picked out and criticized in contemporary literature. Personally, the most underground aspect of the story is not about having sex with a big foot, but the allusion that Whiteman’s animalistic relationship with big foot is similar to having relationships with black women. It is never directly implied that the big foot represents black women in text, but the appearance of the big foot visually insinuates stereotypical features of a black women. The Arrival, by Shuan Tan

How does it tell without using words        "The Arrival", by Shuan Tan, is a collection of imageries that surrealistically captures the industrial-era immigration experience. What makes the story endearing and visceral is that it does not focus on the particularity of words, but rather the specificity and tactility of moments. For instance, readers can emphasize the language barrier between the immigrant and locals through Tan's use of cryptic symbols as the main language. The readers are put in a situation where they cannot get narrative clues from reading text, so they had to retort to the "conventional reading of body language". The tone of this "narration" is elementary but clear, illustrating the immigrant’s goal of getting his message across in the simplest and most universal way.
